A magical children's film that refuses to patronise an audience of any age, Beasts Of The Souther Wild is a revelation from debut director Benh Zeitlin. The rich dichotomy of the Dogme 95-esque 16 mm cinematography and jubliant Dan Romer score are grounded and held in place by a stunning central performance from fellow debutant Quvenzhane Wallis. Not your average kid's film, but a wonderful piece of work nevertheless.

Runner-Up: Silence - A transgressive work of meta-fiction that crosses many boundaries and is also incredibly watchable.
Honourable Mention: ParaNorman - Another terrific work from the Laika animations studio which as a PG-rated film is both scarier and funnier than most stinking up the cinemas.
Second-Most Deadly Disease: Mercenaries - So turgidly boring that'd be frightening if it wasn't such a dullard of a movie.
Avoid Like The Plague: Project X - Just head out to a nightclub on any given Saturday night to see this kind of dickhead behaviour and save yourself the displeasure of having to watch this film.
