Based off of Philip K. Dick’s Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?,
though coming from such a strong literary source, much of what makes Blade
Runner a masterwork are original inventions. It’s a work of stunning design and visual effects from Doug Trumbull,
shot and lit with real creativity by Jordan Cronenweth, elevated wholly by the
melodic hybrid of classical composition and synthesizers of Vangelis’ score. In
an all-round excellent cast, it is Harrison Ford, whose often confused yet hard-nosed,
full of grit Rick Deckard is a great subversion of noir detectives, and Rutger
Hauer’s extraordinary, almost mythical turn as the violent yet philosophical
android Roy Batty, that stand out. Furthermore, through the dogged
determination of Ridley Scott to show no compromises in the pursuit of art, we
have this mesmerizing exploration of the question “what makes us human?”
