No director in recent memory has exploded onto the international
filmmaking scene with quite as much impact as Park Chan-wook did at the Cannes
Film Festival in 2004. A wonderfully macabre Kafkaesque tale of a man
imprisoned seemingly without motive for fifteen years only to be mysteriously
released, Park’s pitch-black humour and tremendous sense of pacing give this
film an energy most thrillers this complex are lacking. Like it’s protagonist
Oh Dae-su, portrayed to such stone-cold brilliance by Choi Min-sik, the film is
flaming ball of majestic malevolence whose exploration of revenge will leave
indelible stains on your consciousness.
