Although oftentimes working with producing partner Robert Chartoff
(They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?, Leo The Last, Rocky, Raging Bull), Irwin
Winkler established himself as an often daring producer. Most people wouldn’t
have backed projects like The Right Stuff and Goodfellas, or put their weight
behind the English-language works of Costa Gavras, but Winkler had enough sense
to see their appeal above and beyond monetary matters.
