The sudden death
of the great Edgar Froese on January 20, 2015 from a pulmonary embolism came as
a shock to the music industry, as his group Tangerine Dream for nearly fifty
years have remained consistently active. Immensely prolific, with over one
hundred studio albums to their name, they also built up a portfolio of
thirty-plus film scores and were for a time considered ‘go-to guys’ for
electronic film scores in the 1980s. Beginning their work in film on William
Friedkin’s 1977 film Sorcerer (Friedkin has since said that had he discovered
them sooner he would have had them score The Exorcist), they went on to produce
acclaimed work for the likes of 1980’s Thief, 1983’s Risky Business, 1987’s
Near Dark and even ventured into video games, collaborating on the score for
Rockstar North’s 2013 major release, Grand Theft Auto V. Notwithstanding their
own work, the importance of their influence on the wider acceptance of
electronic soundscapes in film composition cannot be disputed.
